Expressions for Change: Art Uniting Youth Around the Water Crisis
On 26 November, What Water, Fondation Abalone, and the European School of Luxembourg I proudly hosted the Expressions for Change vernissage. This inspiring initiative brought together pupils, teachers, and the broader community to explore the water crisis and its environmental challenges through the transformative power of art.
Over eight weeks, pupils aged 15โ17 worked closely with the Art Director Christos Koutsoukis, MEd, and their dedicated teachers to create compelling artworks that reflected their unique perspectives on one of the worldโs most pressing issues. Students demonstrated not only artistic talent but also a deep sense of social responsibility, using creativity to raise awareness about global inequalities in access to clean water.
The event served as a profound reminder of the stark contrast between the lives of young people in Europe and their peers in places like Cameroon, where children often walk long distances to fetch water for their families. This juxtaposition resonated deeply with attendees, reinforcing the urgency of What Waterโs mission to ensure equitable access to clean water for all.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this event possible โ school leadership, teachers, partners, and especially the pupils who poured their hearts into this initiative. Special recognition goes to Caroll Lemariรฉ for her unwavering support, Christos Koutsoukis, MEd, for inspiring students to create with purpose, and Kathryn Hargreaves for fostering a strong ethical awareness among students while championing What Waterโs vision of a better world.
This vernissage beautifully demonstrated how art can unite people, spark important conversations, and empower the next generation to address global challenges with creativity, compassion, and courage.
